Rezaul Islam (26) came to Dubai on the 21st of July 2012. He started working for Emirates Flight Catering on the 22nd of July.
“My biggest dream is to create an English medium school in my village. I can help people now. Now that I work for Emirates, people call me Sir. I already donated money to buy a carpet for a mosque in my village. My younger sister is reading in grade 1. I want to give her a better future and that’s why I have to work hard.”
He says the working culture in Dubai is very different to that of Dhaka. There is less quarrelling and fighting here – everyone can work together peacefully, no matter the nationality. His days off are spent with his friends, going to the market, cooking and watching movies on his phone.
Rezaul is approachable, cheerful and a great communicator. He becomes quiet when thinking of home: “I miss rain and going fishing. I last went home two years ago, but I can give my family a better future now, so I am happy. My family no longer lives in the slum. I have built them a nice house.”
